We have applied our detailed knowledge in GNSS to congestion charging. Through one EC and two TSB funded research projects we have implemented a number of trial congestion charging schemes. The aim behind the schemes was to:
Investigate different charging mechanisms such as cordon and TDP (Time, Distance and Place)
Look at driver behaviour and acceptance of different types of charging schemes
Develop sensor fusion algorithms to enhance GNSS
One of the key problems that is faced in implementing congestion charging is creating an accurate bill from the journey travelled. We have developed novel map matching algorithms that produce reliable journey information.
Our EC funded project allowed us to investigate interoperability issues related to implementing schemes across Europe.
