collaboration and information visualisation

The world network connectivity is growing fast. In the UK the majority of homes are connected to the Internet. In the developing world novel approaches are being used to connect remote regions. With this connectivity we have the ability to create "Intelligent Communities" where we can collaborate and share more information, make better decisions and create new opportunities.

Our focus within the "Intelligent Community" is on technology and services that allow groups of people to, in real-time, collaboratively assess and analyse a shared body of information, resulting in improved decision making.

A wide variety of support technologies need to be deployed across the community to support these services and we have developed expertise in many of them. These include:

Security

Situation awareness

Information management

Visualisation

Complex optimisation

Virtual collaboration systems

Many day-to-day scenarios can benefit from the support technologies. Some examples are:

Managing the flow of road traffic (to reduce journey times and pollution)

Managing the carbon footprint of a set of building resources (to optimise energy use)

Managing a construction project (to reduce travel and wasted work hours)

The community care of patients (to increase the amount of care available in the home)

Delivery of e-government services and “community hub” use
